Membership - Men
At Porters Park, we’re renowned for the high standard of our competitive golf but
our members also enjoy social golf gatherings.
Our men’s teams have won the Hertfordshire Club Championship more than 20 times and the English Club
Championship.
Many members have been County players, County captains, County champions, national representatives, Walker
Cup and even Ryder Cup players.
Social golf opportunities
One of the great strengths of the club is the opportunity for members to play social golf. Weekday and
weekend ‘swindles’ are run, where members gather and draw ‘teams’ to play friendly four-ball matches.
An eclectic competition (where you keep your best score on each hole) is held on Thursdays during late
Spring and Summer. This provides a great chance to meet and play golf with other members.
As well as regular medal and Stableford competitions, the club holds annual sociable golf events such as
golfer/non-golfer games, married couples leagues, Captain’s Day, Pro’s Day, Four Nations Charity Day and a
Men’s Christmas Fayre.
Scratch team
Our scratch team has won leagues and tournaments and its members have represented the county at national
level. The squad is made up of category 1 golfers, the lowest six all 1 handicap or better. In 2009, our
scratch team won the Hertfordshire Club Championship, making us the ‘Club of Clubs’, and Nick Pateman won the
Hertfordshire County Championship.
Tigers team
This is a team for players with handicaps between 4 and 10. Matches are well suited to players who enjoy
competitive golf followed by a meal. The Tigers won the West Herts League in 2006.
Foxes and social golf teams
The Foxes and Social Golf matches are played on mid-week afternoons from April to September. Matches are
followed by dinner. Foxes matches are limited to handicaps of 10 to 19. Social matches are open to all.
Commandos team
The club’s senior male members are known as the Commandos. Any male member aged 55 or over is welcome to
participate in the various Commando activities throughout the year. Apart from social events and matches with
the Club’s lady members, the Commandos play fifteen fixtures both home and away against the senior sections of
other clubs.
Bridge team
The club has a thriving bridge section, with many fine players, who compete in local leagues. We also have
fun, friendly bridge evenings.
Men’s academy
Each year, the club’s head professional David Gleeson runs a men’s golf academy course for beginners and
intermediates. This involves six, weekly one-hour, group sessions covering the fundamentals of golf, including
the grip, stance, swing and other aspects of the game.
